The U.S. has been experiencing a nursing deficit for decades, but today—due to an aging population, an aging nursing workforce, and the limited capacity of nursing schools—this shortage is on the cusp of becoming a crisis. As the Baby Boomer generation ages, demand for health-care services are climbing. But the increased demand is only part of the problem. Like the patients they serve, the country’s nurses are also aging, with a large percentage getting ready to leave the workforce for retirement. These national concerns are mirrored here locally. According to a recent study by Executive Resources, LLC, registered nurses are currently the most needed profession in Central Louisiana. In addition, in our area 46% of the workforce is currently 45 years of age or older, and 23% is 55 or older, meaning our local shortage is about to worsen. LSUA, Louisiana College and Northwestern State University are all actively working to expand and enhance their nursing programs to meet the projected demand, but we at CHRISTUS St. Frances Cabrini Hospital want to do our part to help facilitate the growth needed. This new program will encourage and provide scholarships to Cabrini associates interested in furthering their education at these local universities. In addition, it will provide debt assistance for new graduates overwhelmed with student loans. CHRISTUS St. Frances Cabrini Hospital is dedicated to providing the very best in healthcare to the residents of Central Louisiana. Nurses are paramount to make this happen. Thank for your support as we equip and empower those who are called to serve.
